The Reverend Dr Timothy Brian Smith
Rev’d Tim has had a relatively conservative church background that was later informed within the context of an Anglo-catholic part of theological study with lecturers and students from other Christian traditions. This has created what he describes as an open, rather than liberal, evangelical theology and broad expression of churchmanship. The most important thing, he believes, is that you have a relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, not how you express that relationship.
The experience of leading a parish of six churches in the regional context of Australia led Rev’d Tim to explore the leadership of a congregations to become and operate as a mature faith communities connected and sharing resources with other congregations. Fundamental to being a mature faith community is that individual and collectively we are nurturing our relationship with God, nurturing our relationship with one another in the congregation, and nurturing our relationship with those outside the church so that they can find a relationship with God as well. (Mk 12:29-31)
What we do at our church services, then, is not all we do, but is the opportunity to express and celebrate our relationship with God in worship. Church, therefore, has two theatres: in the Temple of our church building, where the focus is worshipping God, and in our house churches, where we can pastorally care for one another, study the Bible and pray together. (Acts 2:44-47)
In addition to this, Rev’d Tim believes that the best teachers of our children are their own parents. He is committed to building a church that resources parents to be the primary witnesses of Christ to their children and youth, and childrens’ activities are intended to support the parents in this ministry, not to do it for them.
